Use for oral histories and sound clips -- and questions

Hello -- I posted this as a question under Items and Archives a few days ago, but haven't gotten a response. Because this is also a use case, I thought I'd share, and see if someone can help me with the issues I've mentioned below.

I'm helping to facilitate the work of an entire class developing a site to explore aspects of local history using oral histories/sound clips and archival documents.

Our class Omeka site (built in Omeka.net) has several exhibits with sound clips -- students have uploaded the clips and put them in the exhibits. The players appear, but there doesn't seem to be a way to link from the players to their associated metadata -- the only case where that happens is when they've uploaded an image along with the audio file. In that case, they have to click the image to get to the sound file, but they do arrive at the item metadata page.

Is there a way to have the audio player bar that appears in the exhibit also serve as a link to the item's metadata? Would they also need to include a photo thumbnail as part of the item for this to happen?

Also -- one of one of the student's clips starts playing when she clicks on the exhibit page the clip is on, without her clicking the actual audio play button. This only happens for one clip, on some computers -- is there a way to control this?

A final question: the clips are all oral histories, so they chose "oral history" as the item type. Does it matter, re: how the sound clip displays, if they choose "oral history" or "sound" as the item type, or is that really a matter only of metadata?

Thanks so much, and I'd appreciate any help!

Hi Sue,

Audio and video players vary by operating system and browser, so there will be differences in playback for different users.

Selecting different item types does not effect the display of the clips, it is only about metadata and sorting by item types.

Would you mind sending your Omeka.net questions to the Omeka.net help form? http://info.omeka.net/contact/

I know that Patrick has been very generous in helping you here, these forums are for questions about the downloadable version.

Sorry for any confusion.

Hi Sheila,

I had no idea I wasn't supposed to be asking questions here, or I never would have. Patrick has been wonderful -- thanks to him again!

Yes, of course I'll send my questions to the link you provided.

Thanks again for everyone's help here.

No worries!
