How to add plain text item

Things were going well until I tried to add a plain text item with a .txt extension. Omeka says it was uploaded but it wasn't. I tried multiple times. Do all items use the same upload directory and what is the preferred method of displaying just plain old no-html no-markup text? I guess I could convert these to PDFs but that seems wasteful. http://michaelsmusicservice.com/carolina/omeka/items/show/5

All the files uploaded go to the same place, and should get some kind of display. From that page, it looks like Omeka knows a file is there, but something odd is happening with the display.

It might help us track it down to know what version of Omeka you are running.

The files for .tif and .mp3 are in the original folder but the .txt file isn't. I tried several times and you can see the Omeka entry is fine but nothing displays because the .txt file isn't there.

I did make a screen shot but I don't see where to put a graphic here so maybe that's not allowed. Here's the system info:

What I would love is to read up on how to enter just plain text items. I could put the text in the Description section of DC but I don't think that's the proper way. I'm so new that I will appreciate any tutorials and help!

I just found that my FTP is probably causing the file to auto-delete. I forced a small test .txt file into the directory and Omeka works to link to it and shows it once you click on the link. Why does it not display without clicking ... like the photos do?

I'm off now to troubleshoot FTP.

Hmm, I don't remember where the FTP login and password are. If I can u/l a file to the directory but Omeka can't, that would seem to be the problem.

Omeka never "embeds" plain text files like it does images and other media. The "Text" element of the "Text" or "Document" item types is probably the way to go here if that's what you want.

Putting text in the DC "Description" seems to display just fine.

Is this OK? I'm afraid there might be a limit to the length.

There is a limit, but it's pretty big, on the order of 16 megabytes.

Wow, thanks! I am making a lot of progress today. I've added all of the Paul Norris items and you can see them all. Now I have to create the graphics and front page stuff. Thanks to everyone who has helped!
