I've marked a few topics as favorites and I've activated the Favorite Notification feature in the profile and I also have a valid email address entered.
However, I am not receiving email notifications when someone adds to the topic.
I was wondering if this could be looked into?

We're looking into this.
Seems there is an issue with the bbPress plugin we're using to enable this feature. The RSS feed for user favorites does work, though. We'll update this thread if we get it sorted out.

For now I'm using http://www.feedmyinbox.com/ to convert the RSS into an email notification.
