I've tried to batch upload images several ways and failed each time. I'm using dreamhost, and I could even go into the MySQL table and manually upload the urls, but I'd rather not.
Any idea why a CSV import (no element assocation selected) with the file box checked would fail?
When you say, "no element association selected" do you mean that you did not select an item type? You will need to choose one item type and have some data in the CSV file. If you checked the box for importing an Omeka.net, you can only import an export from Omeka.net.
If you are interested in batch uploading files, you should install the Dropbox plugin.
