We would like to make our site "viewable" only to people who have an account, the problem is that we need to give them "administrator" rights, which is find for viewing the site but not so great because they can access the back end of the site.
I'm wondering if anyone has had this issue before and if you found a work around?

Varying level of permissions for different users does come up a lot!
One approach might be to modify the Guest User plugin so that it restricts access to non-logged in users. The access control system can be a bit tricky, so I'm not sure off the top of my head what might be required.
There's also work out there on an Embargo plugin, and a theme that restricts content in some way, but I haven't been able to google them up yet, so I don't know what the status is on them.
I think there are also server-side settings if you wanted to make the entire (sub)domain password-protected.
