   JLyles,
   Omeka is a free and open source project and so we wanted to build it on a system that is also free and open source.

   We understand that not everyone has access to a Linux server, and we are planning to offer a hosted version of Omeka late next year.

   Even if your primary system is mac or windows, you can still run/host production linux applications using free virtualization software (VMWare server, Fusion, VirtualPC, Virtualbox) on your Mac or Windows box.
