    I am a new Omeka user (very enthusiastic), but after a long email correspondence with the helpdesk of my webhost, I am disappointed to find out that I cannot display any images in my Omeka installation, as my host says they are unable to allow the execution of the Imagemagick script.

    The error message I am getting when I test the Imagemagic script in the admin settings of Omeka is the following:

    Warning: exec() has been disabled for security reasons in /home/symmetry/public_html/omeka/application/controllers/SettingsController.php on line 97

    Is there a way to work around this limitation? Have any of you had any experience with a problem like this?

    I don't know if there is a workaround for this, but will talk to the rest of the development team to see if they may know one.

    Is there seriously no way to show images on an Omeka installation without running a server-side script? I'm investigating this software for a small local museum, which simply doesn't have that option, but is very eager to share there collection via their website.

    Omeka seems to be everything they're looking for, save this particular hurdle. Please, any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Omeka also uses exec for running background processes (the importer plugins use background processes).

    You may consider getting a another webhost that allows it. There are many inexpensive webhosts that allow it.

    I'm not all that technical, but I am used to systems like Wordpress for blogging, which makes use of similar actions etc., but does not rely on a server-side script (I think).

    Omeka, being for small museums, might be able to achieve these things by using the same technology as Wordpress for example? In theory?

    WordPress is fantastic, but it also relies on server-side scripting. And there are some folks trying to figure out how to integrate Image Magick with WP since it is a better program for image resizing.

    FYI: Our forthcoming http://omeka.net service will offer hosted accounts for anyone who does not want to deal with finding or maintaining LAMP hosting. Getting an Omeka.net account will be similar to singing up for a hosted WordPress.com blog.
