It would be nice if you could catalog things alphabetically on the home page rather than by order of entry.

By "homepage" do you mean the public or admin items show page?
On the admin side, you can click any of the table's heading to re-sort the results by that column.
You can change the sorting order for any "browse" page either through the URL or changes to the code. There's more information about this in the documentation page on Sorting Results.
