You're absolutely right that mysqli should be listed on the Requirements page. Thanks for the vote of confidence, and let us know if you have any more issues.

Btw, the stuff about unicode collation and charset in your database helps if you are using non-latin alphabets in your database. It's quite easy to set if you use phpMyAdmin to create your database. I think maybe some LAMP apps leave it implied that people will know this if they need to, but we make it explicit in order to avoid problems with internationalization in the future. Hope that helps!

I added the print.css manually. Both in the default theme and the admin default theme.
Apparently my FTP did not transfer files with 0B (on Mac I used Cyberduck).
This solved the whole issue....

Thank you very much for the help.

My apologies. I skimmed the board for the answer to my question before I posted, but I wasn't thorough enough. I found the information about the mysqli requirement in alexan6's post entitled "Clemson Library installation". Thank you.

Could this be added to the "System Requirements" section on the "How To: Preparing to Install" page, please? I believe it's essential information and would help many people.

Omeka looks great!!!!!! Nice, clean, simple interface. Wonderful! I have a really good feeling about it. :)

Greetings. Have been really excited to have discovered Omeka! :) At the library where I work, we started out using CONTENTdm. I thought CONTENTdm was ridiculously expensive and so my boss had me investigate Dspace and Greenstone. I looked at Dspace minimally, but I became pretty intimate with Greenstone. I made Greenstone do everything our CONTENTdm site did, functionally and visually. The "higher ups" were happy and I was proud of my work. If anyone cares to see it, it can be viewed at:

digital.lib.cwu.edu

I have tried to install Omeka on my test server at work and on my personal website hosted at iPower. I have followed the instructions to a "T" (and re-read them many times) and when I browse to my installation (both sites), I just get a blank page. Even the html source is completely blank. The only thing I can think of in the instructions that I didn't do (and I admittedly don't understand) is the part about "Make sure the database you create has a collation of 'utf8_unicode_ci' and a 'utf8' charset." How do I do this? I have installed tons of "LAMP" apps and never come across anything like this.

My test server info is as follows:

FreeBSD 7.0-STABLE

Apache 2.2.9  (installed from port)

mod_rewrite installed and enabled

PHP 5.2.6 (installed from port)

MySQL 5.1.26 (installed from port)

I didn't see anything any my apache-error log that was helpful or relevant.

Looking forward to checking out Omeka!! :D
- Gavin

Hi Johannes,

It seems that you don't have a print.css file in omeka/themes/default/css. You can do a few things:

1) Create a print.css file (leave it blank if you want, or add styles to it) in omeka/themes/default/css.
2) Remove the line for the print stylesheet in themes/default/common/header.php
3) Try switching to a different theme, like Minimalist (or download one from our themes list) and see if you get the same error.

If you do have a print.css file in omeka/themes/default/css, there something else is wrong. If that's the case, let us know.

Hope this helps!

Hi,
after many troubles with my past provider, I wasn't able to install omeka, so I switched to dreamhost (as recommended on omeka's web-site).

I switched to php5.2, what seems to be the most issue that people had.

I run the installation, which finished smoothly.

Then the problem:

The whole site is just blank when I call it. When I look into the [view source], it shows the following:
href="http://www.moonstories.org/omeka/themes/default/css/screen.css" />
<link rel="stylesheet" media="print" href="Error:Could not find file 'css/print.css'!

This is exactly the same error I got from my prior installations at other servers...

What could I possible be doing wrong.
thanks
Johannes

I'm not sure which part of this list needs to be fixed. Maybe you could give a bit more info? We haven't run into any of these errors on our server (except the email bug, which was fixed in the stable-0.9 branch). What sort of problems are you having? If we can't replicate it, maybe you could help us out and try patching it and posting that to the dev list? Thanks.

Sorry, we just realized some of the material on the Troubleshooting page was mistakenly labeled. Did you also try this?

If installing mod_rewrite does not solve the problem, check that your Apache configuration allows .htaccess overrides. You will need the AllowOverides All directive in the appropriate place in httpd.conf.

You're right, it should use '/' instead of a hardcoded DIRECTORY_SEPARATOR for making URLs. My guess is that that is not the only thing that would be broken on Windows, but I'm not sure, since we haven't designed or tested it for Windows.

It sounds like you're serious about getting it to work on Windows, so my recommendation would be to check out a copy of Omeka through our version control system (SVN). If you install SVN on windows, you can check out Omeka with the following command:

svn co https://omeka.org/svn/branches/stable-0.9/

That is our most up-to-date development branch, and you can keep up with bug fixes by updating your copy every once in a while.

If you can hack it to get it to work on Windows, you can then leverage SVN to send us your changes, and we might be able to incorporate that into a future release.

Thanks for all your help!

Hello!

I was able to install Omeka on Windows XP using XAMPP.

However, I am having problems with the display on my browser, CSS and Javascript is not working. I believe that it is caused by the backslash \ used as directory separator on Windows. I used web developer firefox extension to view the source. Here is the portion I think which is causing the error:

<!-- Stylesheets -->
<link rel="stylesheet" media="screen" href="http://localhost/om\themes\default\css\screen.css" />
<link rel="stylesheet" media="print" href="http://localhost/om\themes\default\css\print.css" />

<!-- JavaScripts -->
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://localhost/om\shared\javascripts\prototype.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<script src="http://localhost/om\shared\javascripts\scriptaculous.js?load=effects,dragdrop" type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"></script>

Here is the portion when I view the generated source:

<link rel="stylesheet" media="screen" href="http://localhost/om%5Cthemes%5Cdefault%5Ccss%5Cscreen.css">

<script type="text/javascript" src="http://localhost/om%5Cshared%5Cjavascripts%5Cprototype.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<script type="text/javascript" src="http://localhost/om%5Cshared%5Cjavascripts%5Cprototype-extensions.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
<script src="http://localhost/om%5Cshared%5Cjavascripts%5Cscriptaculous.js?load=effects,dragdrop" type="text/javascript" charset="utf-8"></script>

I am guessing that making the directory separator hardcoded as forward slash may fix this. Could this be edited or changed in the zipped file provided for download?

I am sorry for being hardheaded on installing Omeka on Windows, it is just that I thought I can give it a shot :-)

By the way, I have installed Omeka on Ubuntu 7.10 successfully, side by side with WordPress, and I am currently adding data so I don't have much to show yet. I will post the URL once it is respectable enough.

Installing Omeka 0.9.0 a small Gentoo test server we did encounter the whitescreen mentioned in the troubleshooting section, but the error wasn't caused by the
AllowOverides All
directive. Our PHP installation, version 5.2.5, was not compiled with the mysqli extensions which caused the blank page. It took me a little to trace the cause down to the failing Db.php class. A quick recompile fixed our problems and the rest installed cleanly, but do you think it would be possible/useful for Omeka to check for this in the future? Or at least print something useful if you are missing a function?

A simple

if (!function_exists('mysqli_connect')) {
throw new Zend_Config_Exception('PHP missing required MySQL improved extensions.');
}

It appears your host information is inconsistent - in your list of the db.ini file contents you wrote the host was "bigredlox.net", however earlier in the message you said it was hytekhosting. I'm not familiar with your mySQL setup, but it's possible your mySQL host is a separate server -- double check this with your hosting administrator. The message you recieved '<Access denied for user 'scott'@'tau.hytekhosting.com' (using password: YES)>' should at least reflect the host you've entered in the db.ini.

I have been getting this error after I click on the install link.

<Access denied for user 'scott'@'tau.hytekhosting.com' (using password: YES)>

I created the mySQL database with the right collation and charsets, and updated the db.ini file in the application folder with my username, password, and host (HyTekHosting).

host     = "bigredlox.net"
username = "scott"
password = "XXXXXXXX"
name     = "omeka"
prefix   = "bigredlo_"

The server is running
PHP version	5.2.5
Apache version	1.3.39
MySQL version	5.0.45 (community)

Anyone have any ideas on this?

And thanks for this terrific product., I have been waiting for the right project since I heard about it last summer at the Naval Historical Center.

EDIT:
After talking with host company mod_rewrite is not hopefully that will fix this issue.

GSU System Settings:
Linux Suse Enterprise v10
Apache 2.2.3
MySQL 5.0
PHP 5.2.5
ImageMagick (with libjpeg library installed)

Installation/Troubleshooting Tips
Since the Omeka installation is pretty straightforward, we will only concentrate on the problems we met during installation and testing.
1. Upgrading PHP from 4.3 to 5.2.5
1.1 in Suse Linux, use yast2 facility to do the upgrade
1.2 again, using yast2 to enable with enable exif functions (in yast2, search for PHP and enable exif). Exif function is used by FileImages.php (/omeka/application/models/FileImages.php, exif_read_data() etc..). Exif function is used to read meta data from pictures by digital camera.

  2. .htaccess file is a headache. It depends on apache server setting. The .htaccess files come with Omeka are perfect, but we have to add the following code in our apacke config file to make it work with Omeka .htaccess files.

In GSU apache config file, we add the followings:
<Directory "/srv/www/htdocs/omeka">
Options All
AllowOverride All
Order allow,deny
Allow from all
</Directory>

  3. After installation, we found the following problems in our testing.
3.1 Error in adding a new user (blank page)
This was caused by the micortime() function in /omeka/application/models/UsersActivations.php. This function is only available on operating systems that support the gettimeofday() system call. We changed it to date('YmdHis'), and troule resolved.

  3.2 Error in sending activation email to new user.
This is a known issue in Omeka 0.9.0 and to be resolved in next release. A temporary workaround was posted by us in Omeka forum (http://omeka.org/forums/topic/user-activation-issue-temporary-workaround?replies=2). Basically, just add one line of code as a quick fix.
in file: /application/controller/UsersController.php line 122. After
=====================================
try {
if($user->saveForm($_POST)) {
=====================================
Add:
$user->email = $_POST['email'];

  3.3 Error in adding new item to an archive (here we tested adding a new still image). If we leave the field Compression blank, it will cause a database insert error. We changed the database table field files.compression to NULL.

  3.4 Error in uploading images. Omeka returns blank page after uploading an image. It was caused by Exif functions set are not available. Please refer to step 2.2 to learn how to install PHP Exif support.

Ok, I've searched more and the problem (for me at least) was a problem with the configuration for the default site (/etc/apache2/sites-availables/default). In the virtualhost section, directory <Directory /home/syma/www/> I had to change "AllowOverride None" to "AllowOverride All"

Now it works, hope it helps.

Hi Gobezu,

If you are asking if it is possible to install Omeka and run it on your local PC with Windows XP, unfortunately the answer is no. You could try getting an account with Dreamhost: http://dreamhost.com/ or another service as noted by other Omeka users.

Once Omeka is installed and is running on a Linux system, the admin interface--where you add and edit items, build exhibits, et al--is accessible through any web browser on any operating system.

We plan to offer a hosted version of Omeka by 2009, if you can wait that long.

Below are the system requirements, just as a reminder.

    *  Linux operating system
* Apache HTTP server
o make sure mod_rewrite is enabled
* PHP scripting language
o 5.2.x or greater
* MySQL relational database management system
o 5.0 or greater
* ImageMagick image manipulation software
o installation is mandatory for resizing images in Omeka

Dear all developers,

Thanks for this seemingly neat solution, but so far I have only been able to look around as I am on an Windows XP environment.

What are the hurdles towards an XP installation of omeka?

Looking forward to your advice.

I've tried a couple of times now to get an installation of Omeka working.

Environment: Omeka 0.9.0, ubuntu 2.6.22-14-server
php5, mysql5 etc.

Install process works as expected, MySQL database gets created. Everything looks oK. I can load the site homepage (e.g., /omeka/index.php) but all the links off that page are broken and putting /admin/ after the home page URL doesn't work. I get this sort of error message:

The requested URL /omeka/admin/users/login was not found on this server.

Apache/2.2.4 (Ubuntu) PHP/5.2.3-1ubuntu6.3 Server at 129.174.54.208 Port 80

If I click on Browse on the home page, I see my server's trying to resolve:

http://129.174.54.208/omeka/items

The .htaccess files are in the omeka top-level directory and in ./admin as indicated but clearly something's not right.

Anyone have a suggestion on where I might look? I do know that my rewrite module is loaded in Apache2

-- Wally
