Can you turn on debugging in your application/config/config.ini file and send the error message that's displayed on your screen for that specific page? It should provide a traceroot so we can see what file is causing the problem.

Hi there

I have installed the 0.9.2 version of Omeka. I found out that everytime I create an exhibition, if I select "No" at the "Exhibit is Featured" section I get I a debugging page that among other php info includes this

["message:protected"] => string(91) "Mysqli statement execute error : Incorrect integer value: '' for column 'featured' at row 1"

Is there something I can do in order to avoid this error, since I don't want every exhibition I create to be in the featured list?

Thanks
Which version of Omeka are you using? If you haven't already, I suggest upgrading to 0.9.2. If you have, please let me know and we'll see what else might be happening.

Under the Admin interface, when we try to edit an exhibit, it takes us to a blank Add an exhibit page. It also has an error in the add a section box at the bottom of the page. The error is Invalid argument supplied for foreach() in admin/themes/default/exhibits/_section_list.php on line 1. To me it looks like the edit exhibit is not sending correct data but i have not been able to determine where in the process it goes astray.

This is a small bug in the current version of Omeka, and is actually related to the same problem as in http://omeka.org/forums/topic/unable-to-get-to-the-public-site-from-admin-screen. If you look at the source code for the front page, you'll notice that Omeka sets the wrong path for several resources, including javascript - the /admin/ sneaks in there.

The problem is somewhere in the paths.php file in the Omeka root directory - it will probably be fixed in the next version of Omeka. I had one of the developers show me how to fix it, but I deleted that email long ago. However, just send me an email (look up my website/contact info in my profile) and I'll be happy to email you a copy of my paths.php file.

Thanks, Tonu. We are looking into this issue, because it appears that it is happening to a few others as well.

You might try doing what Samip did, which was to install Omeka into its own directory off of the root folder (www.yoursite.org/omekainstallation). That should solve the problem, but we realize that Omeka should be able to function from the root directory though and we are creating a ticket to investigate the problem.

I am having the same problem in that I am not able to add a section to an Exhibit. When I click on the icon nothing happens. I tried in IE and Firefox browsers. My url is pointing to the web root. I have not tried changing this to point the URL to webroot/folder. I am using the 9.1.1 version. I suspect that Javascript is broken on the page. When I move a mouse over the Add a section button, IE says "Errors on Page" at the bottom of the window.

Do you have a suggestion on how to fix it?

Sheila,
Wow, I think I figured out what it is. I had installed omeka onto the root directory so something like http://www.whatever.com/ would lead directly to the archive. It was this that was causing some kind of a problem. When I moved omeka into a new directory (http://www.whatever.com/omeka) it works just fine.
Is there any way for me to fix this? I'd like to still have http://www.whatever.com/ be the archive. I guess for now I can just automatically forward to my subdirectory.
Thanks for your help!
All the best,

Samip,

For re-installing, you probably want to back up your entire SQL database, and then copy the files from the /archive folder.

Your exhibit builder issue may be a Java Scripting error. When you are logged in to your /admin screen, are the corners of the tabs in the dashboard rounded or squared off? Do they look exactly like the ones in the Sandbox? http://omeka.org/sandbox/demo/admin/

I'm asking this silly question because it will help me determine if your issue is just Java Scripting or if it is something else.

Thanks,

Hi Sheila,
Thanks for your response! I'm using 0.9.1.1. It's really strange, I've been trying to figure out what's caused the error too, but am at a total loss. I installed Omeka on a different server to see if "Add a Section" was working there, and it seems to be just fine. The alterations I've made from the install are that I'm creating my own theme and I did install the Dropbox plugin. Besides that, I can't think of anything else I've changed.
I am going to try reinstalling Omeka. At this point I only have a few items added, so it won't make a big difference, but for future reference, is there a way to do this without losing all the items in my archive? I see the archive/ folder, of course, but are there other data files that I need to preserve?
Thanks!!
Nothing seems to be working. I'm able to browse the exhibits from my site and to see them later in the admin panel, so I know they're being created. I just can't add anything to them.

Someone at NYPL had some trouble building exhibits in Omeka 0.9.0, using Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.2180 (SP2). His comments:

"I'm having problems saving any edits I make to the page layouts (ordering of images, page text formatting, etc.). I'm able to add individual images to the archive and to edit metadata for these images, but can't save changes related to the exhibition pages themselves."

Evan,
Others have also commented on the difficulty of making the images stick in the exhibit layout templates. Currently, we are modifying the exhibit builder interface and those changes should help with this problem.

For now, you may just have to play around a little with your mouse during the drag and drop process and try to get that thumbnail as centered in the box as possible. I've had some trouble too but have been able to pull the images into the exhibit pages.

We look to release the modified exhibit builder function in the fall.

Hi Evan,

Are you having difficulty making the thumbnail "stick" into the appropriate box when you are dragging it over, or are you asking if the entire item will be dragged into the exhibit?

Items, as entities, do not get pulled into exhibits. Full item descriptions and metadata remain with the item, as viewed in the items/show page. That metadata does not get pulled into the exhibit. When creating an exhibit, visitors to your site may click on the thumbnail that represents an tem in the exhibit page to see the item's metadata.

If I have misunderstood what you are asking about please don't hesitate to clarify.

I am having problems adding items/images to the pages of an exhibit. I can create a page for the exhibit and I can enter text. But, when I go to drag an item into the box to add it to the page, nothing happens. It looks I am just dragging the image file (either the thumbnail of the item or the four-headed arrow icon) that the browser is showing, not the "item" that is supposed to be recognized by Omeka. I have had the same problem using Safari and Firefox on OS X and Internet Explorer and Firefox on Windows. I have also tried it using different exhibits, but I was met with the same results. Any suggestions? Thank you for your help.

cceglio,

Thanks for sharing your project idea. I think Omeka can be very useful for your exhibit of exhibits.

You will be able to collaborate quite easily with your Omeka site--from both front and back ends. Since Omeka admin is web-based, you can have many people adding to your site from all over the place. As the "super user", you may adjust permission levels as necessary for your collaborators. And the contribution plugin allows visitors to contribute to your archive, and you can use those images, audio files, documents, et al. in building online exhibits.

You'll notice that there is a "website" item type that will allow you to include descriptive metadata for online exhibitions you have found relating to the War on Terror. But, as I'm sure you have already noticed, there are some small temporary exhibits on the War that never received a web presence.

Think about getting a hosted account from Dreamhost (dreamhost.com) to handle your server needs (Linux, Apache, MySql, PhP), and then you can focus on populating your database with some of the sources you've already collected.

Good luck and keep us informed.

I hope this is the appropriate forum to share an idea that is only in its infancy--an idea that hopes one day to be a full-fledged use case. Once I get a rudimentary site together, I'll post it. I welcome feedback and ideas. I'm approaching Omeka as someone who has no programming ability or special technical expertise so I'll be evaluating it from a very particular sort of end user perspective.

Long-term Vision of the Project and Objectives:

Scholars concerned with contemporary events and culture increasingly find it useful, if not essential, to include Web-based materials among the primary sources they study. The transient nature of Web-based information, however, presents a problem for long-term projects and creates difficulties for those who wish to consult a scholar’s sources at a later date. Through my project I hope to explore how digital resources can be used by scholars to:

•Collect, archive, organize, and display Web-based primary sources (i.e., third-party content)
•Append supplemental information, such as image, audio, and text files, that are collected or created separately from Web-based sources
•Share evolving work (via completely open access, in a pass-word protected environment, or a combination of both as desired by the primary user)
•Invite collaboration

Test Case Example: Exhibiting the War on Terror

Over the last two decades, scholars have increasingly made museums and the roles they play as collectors, preservers, interpreters, and promoters of certain forms of cultural capital the subject of study. However, relatively little ink has been devoted to explicating how American museums have wielded their cultural power during times of war. My research on museum activities during past wars takes me to the archives, but my efforts to study museum engagements with the current war are largely dependent upon Internet sources supplemented by my own fieldwork (i.e., visiting exhibits, conducting interviews, collecting printed material). To date, I have collected rudimentary information on a number of museum-based exhibitions related to “the war on terror” as well as exhibits organized by for-profit galleries and non-museum spaces (e.g., libraries).

It was proposed that I might begin by organizing this material into an exhibit of exhibitions—a meta-exhibit—using Omeka, an open-source Web publishing platform designed for users who collect and exhibit materials. This display might represent one layer in the much larger project described in the “Objectives” section of this document. Some have suggested that it might be easier to build my project “from scratch,” but I like the idea of morphing Omeka into something that other scholars can adapt to their projects much in the same way museums can adapt Omeka to their needs.

By including a feature that enables site visitors/collaborators to contribute comments and/or materials it might be possible to:

•Allow visitors to exhibitions to post comments/reviews/images. This would not only expand the types of data I am able to collect about these exhibitions, it might also open up the possibility to collaborate with museums that want to collect visitor feedback on their war-themed exhibitions.

•Learn of exhibitions around the country that might otherwise escape my detection, thus helping to build a more comprehensive database.

•Collaborate with others in collecting, interpreting, and publishing findings based on this material

•These possibilities would apply not only to the proposed test case but to other projects that such a software suite might facilitate.

My Immediate Tasks

1. Spec out the project in enough detail that I can collaborate with the technical experts (I’m a techno-newbie)

2. Experiment with Omeka, assess its strengths and limits in terms of applicability to my project, and write up the results.

Hi carvedhearts. Currently there is no way to add support for JavaScript WYSIWYG editors via plugin. We are thinking of ways to do this, however. In the meantime I would explore putting these things directly in the admin theme template files. See the Design & Templating section of our documentation for more information.

If you have any further questions I suggest you post on Omeka's Themes and Public Display forum. Thanks for your interest in Omeka.

Is there a way to add support for Tiny MCE or FCKeditor or something similar to pages in exhibits?

Even something like Markdown could be useful.

Thanks.

In regard to your last question, could you provide a bit more context of when you're observing this discrepancy in ordering exhibit pages? Did you delete an exhibit page at some point?

Thanks, maybe this is a result of the same issue, but somehow my exhibit pages have been able to skip page sequence. I have an exhibit with pages in order "1, 2, 4, 5."

Hi Douglas,

This is a bug with RC4, and you're the first to catch it. We've added it to our list of tickets to complete before the public release. At the moment, there isn't an easy fix for this for RC4, but rest assured we'll have it fixed before the public release.

As far as your comment on the database structure is concerned: Right now the structure of the table for exhibit items/text (items_section_pages) does imply a relationship between items and text, for a table in that record. But, the table is set up so that the item_id field in that table can have a NULL value. So, a record in this table doesn't need an item associated with it. A text field can stand alone in a page layout, though there seems to be a bug displaying the text input through the "Text" layout.
