Hi buridan,
There isn't a multiple item delete function in the admin side of .10, so the best way to manage that is through PhPMyAdmin. That is how I handle the mass amounts of spam on the Hurricane Digital Memory Bank.

I have to say that it looks like if i don't find a multiple delete system for the submissions, I likely won't be able to support submissions on our omeka. Sure, I'll be installing anti-spam on the april16archive, but for now I've had to turn off submissions because of spam is filling the db faster than i can 3 click delete. so now i have a backlog of i'm guessing 500-1000 spam items which will take 3 clicks each to delete.... in the current system, unless you can give me a nice sql statement.

Hi, actually there is a way to do this. If you put ?recent=false in the query string, so your URL to browse items looks like items/browse?recent=false, it should show the items in the default order.

Hi pcoutas,

For the moment, there really isn't a way to edit that text. But, once the new release is available you will be able edit those helper functions explaining the DCMI terms.

One suggestion to take you through this is to use the Site Notes plugins to offer alternative definitions for your users.

I'm not a historian or a librarian or archival specialist of any type, and I find the scroll-over "help" dialogue for the metadata input boxes in Step Two of "Add an Item" to be a bit confusing! I'd like to change them so contributors have a bit more guidance/help that makes sense in the context of our archive.

Is there a way of changing the information that appears? I had a quick look at a couple of files, but it'd help if someone could point me in the right direction! :)

Thanks Jeremy for the tip and the link to the documentation. That definitely works for each page. Do you think there is a way to do this globally, for all the items, rather than page by page? For example, if I have a 1000 items in my collection and I began adding them with item #1 and ended with item #1000, currently item #1000 is listed first. I was wondering if it's possible to begin with #1 and proceed page by page to item #1000. So the first page would be numbers 1 - 10 and the last page would be numbers 991 - 1000. Our collection is chronological so it would be cool if items were listed beginning with the first year of our collection. I'm not sure if that kind of control is possible, but I'm curious if I can reverse the array globally rather than within a single page.

On the other hand, users will be able to access our collections in chronological order in the collections page, but I'm just curious if it's possible from the items page.

Hi Sean,

There's no setting in the system currently that allows you to reverse the order of items. But, you can hack the public theme to do this.

If you want the items to display in reverse order, you'll need to use a PHP function called array_reverse() to reverse the array of items fed to the items/browse.php file. So, right above where you see:

<?php foreach($items as $item): ?>

You need to add:

<?php $items = array_reverse($items); ?>

So, the final change should look like this:

<?php foreach($items as $item): ?>

<?php $items = array_reverse($items); ?>

This essentially redefines the $items array on that page to display in reverse order.

array_reverse() is documented at PHP.net.

This is not a big deal, I'm just curious if it's possible. When visiting the Items page, the most recently added items are listed first. I'm curious if this can be easily reversed and if it's a theme issue (e.g., in the items/browse.php of the themes directory) or if its a change in one of the admin subdirectories.

Thanks.

A test user just pointed out to me that she can't see any of the custom metadata fields on Add Item: Step 1 when using IE7. After selecting an item type, she just gets the spinning disk and the custom fields never appear. Is this a javascript issue?

This is a big problem. I've been developing our site on my home machine using firefox, but MPOW staff have to use IE. We have added a bunch of custom fields that our staff needs access to.

Hi Kif,

You may add fields to any of the item types.

The new release will offer a complete complement of extensible DCMI fields, so if you are looking for the few DC fields we did not include, just hang on until the fall when all possible DC fields will be available for the filling.

If you are interested in adding new metafields now, you can see the Codex: http://omeka.org/codex/Customizing_Item_Types_and_Metafields;
or listen to a recent screencast that demonstrates how to edit an item type to add, edit, or delete fields: http://omeka.org/codex/Edit_an_Item_Type.

At the moment, you should be able to just edit the HTML for that form element in order to make it display the languages you want. That file is located at admin/themes/default/items/form.php in your Omeka installation. Keep in mind that this will be changing in the upcoming version of the software, but for now that is the easiest way.

Hi,

Right now the tag searching mechanism looks for the full name of the tag (case insensitive). For example, if you had something tagged 'connecticut' and 'river' then your test item would show up with a search for either of those terms, but if the tag is 'connecticut river' then only a search for 'connecticut river' (sans typos) will show that as a result. Basically the tags aren't tokenized when searching, which may not be what you are expecting when you search for those terms. In fact, it may not be what we are expecting, so I'll have to discuss amongst others to determine whether or not this is a bug that needs to be fixed.

Regardless, all the metadata for the item should be searchable with the simple search bar, so that if you have 'connecticut' or 'river' anywhere in the metadata for an item, that item would show up in the search results. MySQL's search is a bit finicky though, so it may not show any results while you only have a few items in your database. Long story short, if you do more data entry, then the results should get better as the data set gets larger.

I hope that helps, and let me know if you have more questions.

I'm having problems using the simple search on any public theme (including the Omeka provided themes). I'm getting no results unless searching for a tag keyword (and only if inputing the full tag name if multi-word). All other fields return nothing.

I've started to modify the Thanks Roy theme but I left this line the same:

I also checked using the search functions on the admin side and am having the same problems in the basic search. The advanced search seems to be working when searching for keywords in a specific field.

Hi Toma,

Currently Omeka does not support XSL transformations. However, by harnessing our plugin capabilities, it would not be too difficult to make such a thing possible. I envision a plugin that allows administrators to upload XSLT stylesheets for particular item types, which would automatically transform the XML output (?output=xml) of item browse and item show pages into XHTML.

For the moment the Omeka team has no plans to write an XSL plugin. I encourage you, or any other interested Omeka user, to write your own.

Best,

Hi,

I was wondering whether omeka supports or will support xsl transformations of xml documents? I.e. is it or will it be possible to create a collection of xml documents, supply an xslt style sheet and have the documents then be presented online as xhtml?

All best,
Toma

Thanks for your reply, Sheila. I think I was making it more complicated than it is!

tburton,

I think that you can decide how you want to handle this. One suggestion is for A, B, C, D, and E to be sections in your main exhibit. Each section comprises pages that deal with a different topic or family. Then each page comprises interpretative text (that does not come from item descriptions) and source thumbnails that link directly to the items (documents, audio, and video clips) in the archive.

Collections offer a way to organize items, but do not contain any interpretive text (other than a collection description) like an exhibit. One item may only belong to one collection at a time, whereas any item may appear in any number of exhibits. Collections can exist around whatever scheme you'd like. Another way to organize items in the archive is by tagging. Each installation offers a cloud allowing online visitors to browse by tag.

Exhibit: tells a story by bringing together different items regardless of collection.

Collection: organizes similar items (by subject, donor/owner, geo location, et al) without any offering any narrative story.

Hope this is helpful.
Sheila
