I'm doing a test installation on the infamous 1and1.com

I've read people having occasional problems, but none of the posts ring a bell for me on this error.

I uploaded everything including the .htaccess files. Set the database info in the db.ini file. I set archive and enclosed to 777 as directed. I went to the home url and *poof* I get this message...

Parse error: syntax error, unexpected T_STRING, expecting T_OLD_FUNCTION or T_FUNCTION or T_VAR or '}' in /homepages/12/d87796153/htdocs/Omeka/application/libraries/Omeka/Core.php on line 14

any thoughts?

We apologize for the delay on our data import plugins. We just released an alpha version of a new Omeka release (0.10), which includes a brand new data model. We'll begin releasing import plugins once the software and database have been thoroughly tested -- i.e. after the final version comes out. For now our priority is writing an OAI-PMH harvester, but a CSV import plugin is probably next in line. We'll keep you posted on our blog when we release these plugins: http://omeka.org/blog/ .

Hi,

Is there any news on the CSV import plugin? I'm looking at Omeka to create a website for an important archaeological metalwork collection of about 4000 records (+photos), and it would be rather handy!

Any news or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Both of these features would be useful plugins that extend the basic functionality of Omeka. If you have any PHP programming experience I'd invite you to discuss the ideas on the developers group (http://groups.google.com/group/omeka-dev/) where we can answer questions about developing plugins and provide technical suggestions for implementing them into your Omeka installation.

Hi brix11,

We have discussed commenting on items, but it is not planned for the .10 release.

As for linking, we don't have the same type of linking that Zotero offers in their "related" function. But, in the new release you can more easily hyperlink text in the fields through an optional WYSIWYG editor. In the "relation" Dublin Core field, for instance, you could link to other item URLs.

This is an interesting question, and one I don't think we've run into yet. Omeka is built using the Zend Framework, so I checked with no such luck to see if they have any hardware guidelines.

My estimation, based upon experiences over the past 7 months of helping individuals and institutions set up Omeka is that once software requirements are met, Omeka can run on standard and pretty basic hardware. Perhaps one of the other developers have thoughts about memory and processor speed --

I have seen the software requirements on the Omeka Web site, but I didn't see anything about hardware. Being that people are hosting it on Dreamhost and other web hosing platforms, my guess is that the requirements, especially for a low use site, are not very great. However, I was wondering if anyone had any guidelines as to what speed processor and how much memory is required to run Omeka. Any thoughts?

Hi ewb,

I don't know enough about PHP to know what possible issues might exist, but so far it's all good and we've been working on our site for a few months now. We're not using a lot of plugins at the moment, just DropBox, COinS, and Sitenotes. All are working well. We did test the Contribution plugin and that seemed to work too.

Just follow Dave Lester's post in the link Sheila Brennan provided and it should work. By the way, we're using PHP 5.1.6.

Hi ewb,

Others have asked about the requirements and this post seems to be the most relevant: http://omeka.org/forums/topic/php-version-requirement#post-502.

We have not been testing in anything other than PHP 5.2 so cannot verify Omeka's effectiveness in 5.1x but there is a work-around that another user tried (in the post linked above ) that might be helpful for you too.

Well, vmware fusion is definitely low-cost at $40 now with rebates or $40 outright with academic discount. But, I do get your point. The U of AZ School of Information Resources and Library Science (my institution) has just been awarded a major IMLS research grant (see http://imls.gov/news/2008/091008a_list.shtm#AZ) and part of that involves dissemination. I'll be posting at least a couple preconfigured VMs after this fall's advanced digital collection classes conclude (I want to see what we run into to make sure the images are solid). And although I haven't tried them yet, there are some posts on the net that discuss how to convert a vmware image to virtual box. So, I think this will come together over the next few months. I'll post back anything related to Omeka here.

If you could provide a pre-configured Ubuntu VM with Omeka, I think that would really go a long way to get a lot of people started. The thing is, as a Mac user, I'd be cutoff because there is no free vmware player (although they exist for Windows and Linux). You could maybe also release a pre-configured VirtualBox VM, as it is free in all 3 platforms, if you have the spare time or know someone that does.

I've created a fairly detailed document explaining how to install Omeka in a VMWare virtual machine running Ubuntu Linux on Mac (VMWare Fusion) and Windows (VMWare server and workstation) desktop platforms. This is useful for demo/development/checkout/ and classroom instruction. It may also help with installation procedures on a standalone Ubuntu server. The document is available at http://digin.arizona.edu/files/omeka.pdf. If you have questions or comments, let me know. If there is demand, I could also provide a downloadable pre-configured virtual machine. We're using this and other virtualized digital repository applications in our Advanced Digital Collections course for the University of Arizona's Digital Information Management Certificate program (http://digin.arizona.edu), which, by the way, is also partially funded by IMLS.
