We'd certainly be very honored if you showcased the site. Thank you for asking.

I'm still not done with the theme, but I was definitely hoping to generalize it for community use. I will do that over winter break so maybe by late December or early January I'll have a theme to submit. By that time I should have all the kinks ironed out. I will soon begin testing the site with the new Omeka release too.

Thank you all again!

Hi all,

We launched our site at http://archive.poyi.org/! We've been working on this site for a while now and it's been a lot of fun. Omeka's been a great piece of software for us. There's still a lot to do, my list is too long to enumerate here, but basically there are tweaks, navigational stuff, metadata control, etc. still to fine tune. Plus the last 10 or so years need to be described. We're still waiting for some of that data though, so it might be a little while. We also have yet to build an exhibit.

POYi is a photojournalism program founded in 1945 and holds annual contests every year. The photos in this archive include all the various kinds of winners from those contests. With 65 years of photos (more to come) there are nearly 40,000 images altogether. Give it a look over and if you see anything that needs attention or if you have any suggestions, questions, please let me know (sean.csb [at] gmail.com).

Once again I want to thank every one for all their help with our project. Your support has been invaluable.

Thanks for sharing your project plans. Omeka sounds like a good platform for sharing your research.

We will post to the blog once we have the CSV import/export plugin available. We know that many people want an easy way to migrate their data, so we are working on it.

I have just begun to use Omeka as a final project for a graduate-level course in digital humanities. I thought I would post a brief introduction here as a use case. I am a relatively non-technical user, so I am sure I will have many questions forthcoming.

I am archiving materials from a two-week dance company residency at my university and exploring how to use tags and other metadata to relate these materials in a virtual exhibit. I am primarily archiving events (workshops, lectures, rehearsals and performances) with related photos, transcriptions of sound files and handwritten documents, and (possibly) sound and video files forthcoming. I would also like to explore some plug-ins for interactivity, including the contribution plug-in for public use.

I have read other threads inquiring about importing batch metadata and heard mention of a CSV translator in development. I too would ideally like to import metadata from Excel files. For now, I am manually entering data for each item. I will likely continue working on this project beyond the course requirements and upcoming semester deadline. I look forward to new developments...

Hi Rybesh,
Yes, I think that you can use the Event type for saving date and location information about Goldman's lectures. This type also helps you and your users to search by the different types of events where Goldman spoke, for instance union meetings versus a library lecture (not sure that the libraries would have welcomed her, but you never know).

And yes, relation helps you to connect related objects. You may also upload a file with the text of her lecture to the event. It really is up to you how you want to interpret these core fields.

Good luck with your project.

I'm trying out Omeka for a collection of materials related to Emma Goldman's lecture tours. Ideally I would like to store information about each lecture as an "Event" item and link each one to related "Document" items (flyers, newspaper articles, etc). I'm imagining I could use the "relation" field on each Document to point to the related Event.

Does this make sense? Is this how the Event type and relation field are intended to be used? Would love to hear any feedback about this approach.

No problemo. I actually worked for the Missouri Historical Society on the Richard A. Gephardt Papers Project. The bulk of work was general processing (*ick*), but during the second year they brought in myself and three others to digitize. I think we ended out scanning like 2,500 photos and recording a god awful amount of AV materials. In addition to the processing of course. If you are interested check out the Archon Server and look at the Gephardt finding aids:

http://archon.mohistory.org/

We made a few modifications to Archon's PHP and display. Unfortunately, I'm not completely sure of the details right now, because my boss farmed some of our web development out although I am still in contact with her. The big things we did were to add an export option within Archon, use that to import the same information to ContentDM, and then sync the two using a staticURL. This let us enter metadata in Archon but copy it (along with the associated files) for ContentDM to upload. At one point we validated all of our finding aids against the EAD DTD but some changes have been made since then too.

But yea, if the archivist is still interested I'd be glad to help him out if I can. The only problem is I'm fairly busy as of late and may take a day or so to respond. I take it you have my e-mail? Also, as far as Archon goes he might want to get in contact with Chris Prom. I'm not sure about "trade secrets" or whatnot, but he was very helpful with us.

Yes, there is a CSV translator in the works that would allow you to export your Excel into CSV and then import that into Omeka.

By any chance can you share some of the work you did with the Archon program? Might be helpful to our digital archivist who is busily toiling away. If yes, I can put you in touch with him (off-line).

Actually, we have been using it. :) It's nice to have a batch tool when dealing with more than 10 files at once. The only problem, and I brought this up in another thread, was that the plug-in dosen't have a way to batch associate metadata. In my case I have several Excell files of information just waiting to be entered. I know you guys are eventually planning to offering support for this, but it might be nice to be able to map various internal and external fields. Especially since you are using Dublin Core. I did something very similar last year with the University of Illinois Archon program and it saved tons of time.

I'm glad to see the administrative staff involved with end-users.

Myself and several others are in the process of developing a prototype that uses Omeka for the POYi Competition. For those of you unaware, the POYi competition is a world renown journalism event that dates back to 1943. Every year the judging committee (including several Pulitzer Prize winners) accepts photograph submissions that are judged by category, composition, etc... We have some really quality content and are genuinely excited about it.

Anyway, right now the goal is to develop a new online presence for the POYi competition. The current one located at: [www.poyi.org] could stand some major work. To resolve it's problems we have decided to start over. The plan is to use Drupal to host the main POYi site and Omeka to structure, describe, and present the archived winning images. There are roughly 35,000+ of them!

I'm not sure where the project will take us at this point but hopefully Omeka will continue to fit into the equation. It's support for metadata and displays certainly is something we want to keep!

cceglio,

Thanks for sharing your project idea. I think Omeka can be very useful for your exhibit of exhibits.

You will be able to collaborate quite easily with your Omeka site--from both front and back ends. Since Omeka admin is web-based, you can have many people adding to your site from all over the place. As the "super user", you may adjust permission levels as necessary for your collaborators. And the contribution plugin allows visitors to contribute to your archive, and you can use those images, audio files, documents, et al. in building online exhibits.

You'll notice that there is a "website" item type that will allow you to include descriptive metadata for online exhibitions you have found relating to the War on Terror. But, as I'm sure you have already noticed, there are some small temporary exhibits on the War that never received a web presence.

Think about getting a hosted account from Dreamhost (dreamhost.com) to handle your server needs (Linux, Apache, MySql, PhP), and then you can focus on populating your database with some of the sources you've already collected.

Good luck and keep us informed.

I hope this is the appropriate forum to share an idea that is only in its infancy--an idea that hopes one day to be a full-fledged use case. Once I get a rudimentary site together, I'll post it. I welcome feedback and ideas. I'm approaching Omeka as someone who has no programming ability or special technical expertise so I'll be evaluating it from a very particular sort of end user perspective.

Long-term Vision of the Project and Objectives:

Scholars concerned with contemporary events and culture increasingly find it useful, if not essential, to include Web-based materials among the primary sources they study. The transient nature of Web-based information, however, presents a problem for long-term projects and creates difficulties for those who wish to consult a scholar’s sources at a later date. Through my project I hope to explore how digital resources can be used by scholars to:

•Collect, archive, organize, and display Web-based primary sources (i.e., third-party content)
•Append supplemental information, such as image, audio, and text files, that are collected or created separately from Web-based sources
•Share evolving work (via completely open access, in a pass-word protected environment, or a combination of both as desired by the primary user)
•Invite collaboration

Test Case Example: Exhibiting the War on Terror

Over the last two decades, scholars have increasingly made museums and the roles they play as collectors, preservers, interpreters, and promoters of certain forms of cultural capital the subject of study. However, relatively little ink has been devoted to explicating how American museums have wielded their cultural power during times of war. My research on museum activities during past wars takes me to the archives, but my efforts to study museum engagements with the current war are largely dependent upon Internet sources supplemented by my own fieldwork (i.e., visiting exhibits, conducting interviews, collecting printed material). To date, I have collected rudimentary information on a number of museum-based exhibitions related to “the war on terror” as well as exhibits organized by for-profit galleries and non-museum spaces (e.g., libraries).

It was proposed that I might begin by organizing this material into an exhibit of exhibitions—a meta-exhibit—using Omeka, an open-source Web publishing platform designed for users who collect and exhibit materials. This display might represent one layer in the much larger project described in the “Objectives” section of this document. Some have suggested that it might be easier to build my project “from scratch,” but I like the idea of morphing Omeka into something that other scholars can adapt to their projects much in the same way museums can adapt Omeka to their needs.

By including a feature that enables site visitors/collaborators to contribute comments and/or materials it might be possible to:

•Allow visitors to exhibitions to post comments/reviews/images. This would not only expand the types of data I am able to collect about these exhibitions, it might also open up the possibility to collaborate with museums that want to collect visitor feedback on their war-themed exhibitions.

•Learn of exhibitions around the country that might otherwise escape my detection, thus helping to build a more comprehensive database.

•Collaborate with others in collecting, interpreting, and publishing findings based on this material

•These possibilities would apply not only to the proposed test case but to other projects that such a software suite might facilitate.

My Immediate Tasks

1. Spec out the project in enough detail that I can collaborate with the technical experts (I’m a techno-newbie)

2. Experiment with Omeka, assess its strengths and limits in terms of applicability to my project, and write up the results.

I really wanted to implement omeka as a resource within the durpal-based Leonardo Education Forum site in order to keep our somewhat skittish users in one place and so that discussion forums could concentrate on the exhibits without having to go elsewhere.

Luckily I found a hack until there's an api :) that allows seamless integration.

Basically you start by creating a page that you want to embed your omeka pages into and name it something like 'exhibits'.

Then you can create a block with the code to embed.

I used an iframe:

‛<iframe
src="http://semeiotic.com/omeka"
height="350"
width="350"
frameborder=0>
</iframe>‛

You can also use some php code:

‛<?php
ob_start();
include_once "http://www.semeiotic.com/omeka";
$output = ob_get_contents();
ob_end_clean();
return $output;
?>‛

...but it overrides drupal's style sheet so the effect is not-so-good.

Once the block is saved, configure it to show only on the page you made as 'content'.

Voila! That should be it.

see here: http://artsci.ucla.edu/LEF/exhibits

You could embed the code directly into the first page you made, but it sent me away from the site to the link. I'm aiming to mask the omeka host with the drupal site.

Hi Trevor,

Thanks for your interest in Omeka. Correct me if I'm wrong, but it sounds like you'd like to mash up some kind of map api with objects in your collection, to create an online exhibition. We currently haven't released a plugin to do that, but Omeka's extensible architecture makes it possible for you to create one. At CHNM we've been working on a map plugin, but I'm unsure on the specific timeline for its completion.

My assumption is that you're looking for something like this in the end:
http://anthemsonmap.googlepages.com/index.htm

Hello,

My organization, ECHO Lake Aquarium and Science Center (echovermont.org) is considering evaluating this software. I'm particularly interested in creating a feature for sharing video layered over maps. Is someone working on that already that I could connect with?
