All threads in this section have been closed in preparation of our first public release 0.9.

Feel free to reference these threads to find solutions to your answers, however we ask that you to post new discussion threads to the various new sections of the forums instead of here. Many of these threads reference previous versions of Omeka that we've tested, and all of the problems mentioned have been resolved.

The display_files() function handles the output of files in the default themes packaged with Omeka, although in RC4 I believe not all the themes used this. We've made sure all themes released in the future follow this convention consistently, which should allow you to embed the audio right on an item show page.

At this time we don't have any kind of flash-based media player to handle media output, although that would be a welcome addition in the future -- possibly as a plugin.

This really is probably a continuation of the movie files query, but I will ask anyway.

Is there a way to play sound in the exhibit space or on the display pages of an item? We can download an audio file (from the archive) and it plays. But, it does not display in an audio player embedded in the page. The parallel is that the images open and are visible right away. I would like to do this with sound. The movie question appears to be similar.

Our goal would be to create exhibits with sound/images/film using Omeka that look something like (though somewhat less elaborately designed) one of our dynamic pages:
http://www.culturalgardens.org/
and/or
http://academic.csuohio.edu/euclidcorridor/

My guess about the appropriate answer: I build a plug-in that will display the sound/movie in the exhibits. This seems obvious, but I want to confirm that there is not a straightforward answer within Omeka itself....

We have lots of excited community partners!!!

Hi Matt,

I had accidently installed a newer version of the dropbox plugin, that apparently doesn't work with RC4. I've installed the version of the dropbox that is compatible with RC4, so you should be all set.

Hi Dave,

If I follow the Steps to Reproduce detailed above, at the end of the process (after clicking Batch Add) I am brought back to the Main Dashboard where I see the "Getting Started with Omeka" title.

I am not taken to a screen where I have the option to upload the files. (I have already FTP'd the files to the chnm/curiosity/plugins/Dropbox/files directory) but i see no options through the web application.

A potential separate but possibly related issue:

As I was further testing the issue today, I encountered the following on Vista while using IE 7, when I select to add an item (from the main dashboard page), I see the list of items I uploaded through FTP with the check boxes. I also see the list of files in Firefox (also running on Vista). When I look in Firefox on OS X, I do not see the uploaded items.

However, if I check any of the boxes and finish add process, The images are then associated with one item.

This seems to be a separate issue. I have screen-shots if you would like them.

Thanks,

Let me clarify something: When you click the 'batch add' secondary tab you're brought back to the dashboard? Or that once you select files on that page, and try uploading them that you're sent to the dashboard?

Neither should occur, but it may give me a better idea of what's going on. Make sure the files directory is writable, because the plugin actually moves files within the file system and will remove them from the /files/ folder upon success.

I am attempting to use the Batch Add feature under the Archive and seem to be encountering a problem. As far as I can tell, I have the correct permissions on the uploaded files.

Steps to reproduce:

1: I FTP'd a series of jpgs to the files directory under the Dropbox plugin directory.
2: I then logged into the admin site.
3: Clicked on the archive tab.
4: Clicked Batch Add.

At this point I was returned to the Dashboard screen.

Hello,

You need to edit the
about.php
file in your public theme. So, if you wanted to edit the about page in the "default" theme, you'd edit the file at this location:

/path/to/omeka/themes/default/about.php

...where "path/to/omeka" is the location on your server where you've uploaded Omeka.

Hi Patrick,

There's a function in Omeka called display_files() that should play the movie file associated with an item. In your template, wherever
$item
is used, you can add this:

<?php display_files($item->Files); ?>

The
display_files()
function will create a download link if the file is anything except an image, movie, or audio file. If you'd prefer to make a download file for each file associated with your item, you can loop through your item's files and provide a download link using this code:

<?php foreach ($item->Files as $file) {

echo '<a href="'. file_download_uri($file). '" class="download-file">'. $file->original_filename. '</a>';

} ?>

Hope this helps!

There's nothing built into Omeka that will zoom into images, so anything like this will have to be coded and added to the public theme.

There should be a way to do this, but we'll need more information about what specifically you want to do. Have you developed an application or script that wraps the images into a magnification tool, like a JavaScript or Flash wrapper? Or, is the tool included in a file of some kind?

Also, we did switch to the Dreamhost sever and I've set up two meetings with the university media producer. Each time, the server was not accessible to ftp. With Bluehost, there was a phone number to call and very good telephone support. With Dreamhost, there is no support telephone number and you are left to leave a message online which they reply to at their leisure. They send an email back. There is no dialog to diagnose the problem. It looked like there was online chat support but that wasn't available. Because we set up a meeting each time, this has put us back about a month. Bluehost had far better support and a better interface. I'm sure we will be able to work out the problem.

The administrative part of RC4 has been working beautifully.

However, whenever we go to the public site, images *are not* appearing, although the textual information does appear. Neither do exhibits appear. We get an error:

We get an error, "404 Not Found."

...
Not Found

The requested URL /items/browse was not found on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
...

It would appear that the folders are not being assigned properly. We have worked for a couple weeks trying to diagnose this problem by looking at our file structure, but could not diagnose:
Here is the site URL: http://euclidcorridor.dreamhosters.com/

Hi, the first thing I noticed was that you are running a version of PHP that we don't support. Omeka requires PHP 5.2.x in order to run properly. The error that you see comes from an obscure bug for a section of code that works completely in PHP versions > 5.2 but fails in lower versions. I would advise upgrading to PHP 5.2 (I think the newest version is 5.2.4 or 5.2.5) because we won't be able to support older versions.

My hunch is that the error you were having with adding images is also related to this.

Let me just tweak my previous post -

just add back the <div id="searchwrap"></div> to surround the PHP code and the search box should stay in the top right corner.

Excellent! That solved it. And if anyone is interested here are some more details:

1) The PHP search code (per KrisKelly's note) needs to be tweaked in the "header.php" file here:

/omeka/themes/minimalist/common/header.php

You also need to tweak the formatting of the search box by adding in some HTML formatting code (to surround your PHP) if you want the search box to float back to the right corner of the theme page.

Thanks!

Hi, actually this is an error in the design of that theme. Back when we initially designed the themes, the search mechanism wasn't working properly, so we were putting boilerplate code in where the search bar should be. The code for that should actually be the following:

<?php simple_search(array(), uri('items/browse')); ?>

If you replace the HTML for the existing form with the above code, it should work fine. If you don't feel comfortable editing the source code, then feel free to wait for the next release when it should work fine.

Thanks for catching that!

In the Item data model, additional data is saved after forms are executed, so it makes sense that the item would be added even if there's an error saving to a collection. With that said, collections should be associated properly and do so on other systems we're testing Omeka on.

What are the specs of your server? (php and mysql versions - I asked this on another thread, too)

Try turning on debugging to share more-specific error messages. You can do this by editing the config.ini file located in application/config. Set debug.exceptions = true That'll shed some light on what's breaking.

What versions of PHP and mySQL are you running?
