Researcher users unable to see private items from simple search

I haven't been working with Omeka in a while so I may be missing something obvious, but when a "researcher"-level user performs a simple search on the admin side, only public items are returned. Nonpublic items can still be viewed and browsed - even an advanced search will list them, but a simple search won't. Any ideas? Thanks!

The simple search, since it potentially could contain things that are accessible only to higher-level users, is more restrictive about who can see "private" search results than each individual record type is.

For now, this is a limitation of the way the site-wide search is designed.
