I loaded dropbox and then installed under plugins. It came up in the left hand column under dashboard, but when I click on it is shows the plug in above- in this case Collection Tree. I have tried installing/ uninstalling, etc...

This sounds like something we just caught recently. Do you have the most recent version of Dropbox (0.7.1)?
Yes the most recent- although I have yet to update to omeka 2.01.
