Apologies for asking the obvious question, but are you logging out before you look at the public side?
Even when you're on the public side of the site, if you're logged in, you'll see all the items. It'd be pretty hard for a theme writer to get around the public/nonpublic restrictions, so it seems unlikely that easy-colour is the culprit here.
