Image Enlargement and Zoom tool

Many users would like a way to click on an image and see a larger and/or zoomable version rather than always go to the catalog record. The catalog record approach makes lots of sense to archivists and historians, but not to the many lay users.

Clicking on the image in the items/show page will take users to a full-size image on its own page, but there isn't a specific zoom tool for Omeka although some others have worked it into their sites.

For example, the Lincoln at 200 site, from the Newberry Library & Chicago History Museum designed a site with Zoomify in the exhibit builder: http://lincolnat200.org/exhibits/show/thewest/freelabor/neworleans

Would Zoomify also be useful for a project where the pages of a diary and its transcription will be displayed?

I'm new to Omeka and am looking for a way to set up a simple site with project info and then a space for users to view two diaries, one of which will also have a transcription.

I've been advised of bugs re timelines etc. Would Zoomify be a better route to take? Are there any other plugins you would recommend?

Zoom.It hasn't been upgraded for Omeka 2.0 yet, but we have a Docs Viewer that would probably be helpful. http://omeka.org/add-ons/plugins/docs-viewer/

Hi Sheila,

Many thanks for the Docs Viewer link. I will take a look at same today.

Are there any other standard plugins and also plugins re enhancements which you would advise re basic setup of a good Omeka site, to include the following:

1) A tab with a page that holds a plugin, which functions as a display area re the images of two diaries and also a transcription for one of the diaries.

2) A few tabs with pages of project information (eg: technical information, historical information, acknowledgements)

3) A tab which holds a gallery of other images, which are also connected with content of the diary and could hopefully within the site be linked to specific diary entries.

Many thanks.

Thanks. And just one final question! Do you have any links to existing projects or demos which demonstrate the use of DocsViewer with regard to the above requirements, that is to say a "side by side" display of the digital image and transcription, preferably in a slider or something similar which allows the user to easily click to the next image and connected transcription.

I haven't found an example on http://omeka.org/codex/Sites_Using_Omeka yet re DocsViewer, however I did find a Zoomify example that will illustrate the type of Plugin that I need:

Thanks again.

You're not going to find something that is plug-and-play as you're describing. As I said in a previous post, you might be able to use the exhibit builder to test out some scenarios that might work for you.

Those sites are good examples of customized theme and plugin development for their sites.
