Is there a way to add a photo onto the simple pages one creates? I have attempted to use "Insert/Edit Image" and paste the image url in but nothing shows up when the public page is viewed.

Probably the image tag isn't among the allowed HTML elements. Under Settings -> Security at the bottom of the page you can specify allowing the img tag and src attribute (or turn the filtering off completely)
