How To: Preparing to Install

Before installing Omeka, make sure the web server you will be using meets our system requirements. Thankfully, Omeka only requires free and open source software that is already installed by most web hosting services. After these system requirements are met, all you need to do is install the Omeka software:

System Requirements

Linux operating system
Apache HTTP server
- make sure mod_rewrite is enabled
PHP scripting language
- 5.2.x or greater (with mysqli extensions)
MySQL relational database management system
- 5.0 or greater
ImageMagick image manipulation software
- installation is mandatory for resizing images in Omeka

If you are interested in installing Omeka in a VMWare virtual machine running Ubuntu Linux on Mac (VMWare Fusion) and Windows (VMWare server and workstation) desktop platforms, see these instructions (pdf).

Browser recommendations: while the Omeka /admin interface runs on all browsers, we recommend Firefox (Mac/PC) or Safari (Mac/PC). See Identified Bugs for more information.
