If you are considering moving an Omeka project to [Omeka.net], please note that there is not currently a one-click service that allows for this transition. You will be responsible for migrating data and creating new sites in Omeka.net. Carefully consider this move, because you may lose some flexibility and functionality you currently enjoy with hosting Omeka yourself.
Basic steps for moving to Omeka.Net (additional details below)
- Install OAI-PMH Repository plugin on current Omeka.org site, and enable file sharing.
- Sign up for Omeka.net and choose an appropriate plan.
- Create a new Omeka.net website.
- Login to the website and activate plugins, including OAI-PMH Harvester.
- Import Archive using OAI-PMH.
Omeka.net plans
- Choose a plan that can handle the size of your current Omeka archive. The basic free account that allows for up 500mb of storage. [See information about all plans]
- Choose a plan that has the plugins and themes you are interested in using, but understand that Omeka.net does not offer the full complement of plugins available to you now in the Add-ons Directory.
Themes
- Customized themes are not transferable to an Omeka.net site. Omeka.net users do not have access to the server files and cannot upload themes.
- Themes may configured in the admin/themes interface on Omeka.net, similarly to what is possible for Omeka.org
Plugins
- Plugins and most plugin data are not transferable to an Omeka.net site. Omeka.net users do not have access to the server files and so cannot upload their plugins or modify any of the files.
- Plugins may be configured through admin pages.
Importing Data
- To import an Omeka archive to an Omeka.net site, install the OAI-PMH Repository plugin on the current site you are hosting and check box enabling file sharing. http://omeka.org/codex/Plugins/OaiPmhRepository
- Customized Item-types: custom item types and their fields will not be imported.
- Plugin-related data: Additional metadata created with Geolocation, Dublin Core Extended, Contributor-related data from public contribution form, contribution form, relationships created by Item-relations, will not be recognized by OAI-PMH and imported.
- Use the Omeka.net version of the OAI-PMH Importer plugin to import those items: http://info.omeka.net/build-a-website/manage-themes-and-plugins/oai-pmh-harvester/
- Any content that you've created in exhibits or on Simple Pages does not transfer. If you have content in exhibits or pages that you wish to move, you will have to re-create the exhibits and pages by hand.
- Omeka.net's version of Simple Pages does not support HTML or PHP.
