How To: Add, Edit, Delete an Item

Add an Item

NB: Omeka /admin interface runs on all browsers, we recommend Firefox (Mac/PC) or Safari (Mac/PC). When using IE7 there is a Java Script problem (we are working on) when choosing an item type on the items/add page. All other functions can be accomplished with IE7.

1. From your dashboard (mywebsite.org/admin) click "Add an item to your archive." You will then begin an easy 3-step process for adding your object.
2. Step 1, asks you first to choose the appropriate item type for the object you are adding. Once you choose the type, appropriate metadata fields appear for you to fill in as best you can.
3. If you are uploading a file, do it in step 1.
4. Step 2 takes you to the Dublin Core Metadata fields that are available for every item in this archive. Fill in as best you can.
5. Step 3 allows you to add this item to a collection, makes the item visible to the public or featured on the archive's homepage, and provides space to tag this item with keywords.
6. Each archive will differ, but for institutions familiar with collections nomenclature use the tags as a way to describe these items in more basic terms, ie. tool, iron, farming, et al.
7. Be sure to click the "Add Item" button to save your data.

Edit an Item

1. Access the Archive from the tab in the top navigation bar in your /admin interface.
2. Find the item you want to edit from the list of most recently-added items or by searching.
3. At the end of the item listing, click on the "edit" button which takes you to the /edit/item# page.
4. Find the appropriate field to edit and be sure to scroll to the bottom of the screen to click the "save changes" button. If you do not hit save, your changes will be lost.
5. If you find yourself in the edit screen by accident, scroll to the bottom of the page and click "cancel."

Delete an Item

1. Follow steps for editing an item, but when you get to the /edit/item# page, scroll to the bottom of the screen and click "Delete this Item."
