Doc Viewer Returns and Page Caching Arrives
Omeka has a document viewer plugin once again! Some of you may remember our iPaper viewer that worked with version 0.9. After a few upgrades in our system and some changes in iPaper’s API, we decided to build a new plugin.
DocsViewer embeds a Google document viewer into item/show pages in both the public and administrative interfaces. The viewer reads PDF documents, PowerPoint presentations, TIFF files, and most Microsoft Word documents.
In addition to DocsViewer, we are also releasing a Page Caching plugin that will improve the load time of an Omeka site by offering different types of caching that is configurable in the plugin settings.
Try these plugins and let us know what you think.

The downside to this plugin is if your Omeka installation is only accessible on a private network, then Google Docs viewer cannot download the documents from your server.

The other downside is privacy. Any document that is viewed is shipped off to Google. This can be a problem if you are working with material with access restrictions (eg. certain types of oral history).

What were the most important reasons why iPaper was dropped ?
Interesting to read that ScribD, the company behind iPaper is abandoning flash in favor of HTML5

The decision was made prior to iPaper’s decision to go with HTML5, and it had more to do with how Scribd changed its API and how that worked with Omeka. If you are interested in building an iPaper plugin, give it a shot and ask some questions on the dev list.
